Alibaba Cloud launched Qwen 3, its most powerful large language model to date, claiming performance that matches OpenAI's GPT-4o across key benchmarks including reasoning, coding, and multilingual tasks. In an aggressive strategic move, the company announced the model would be available free of charge to enterprise users through its cloud platform, intensifying the already fierce AI price war in China.

The launch comes as Baidu, ByteDance, Tencent, and dozens of smaller Chinese AI companies compete for dominance in the world's second-largest AI market. Alibaba's free-tier strategy is designed to rapidly build market share by removing the cost barrier for businesses experimenting with AI integration. The company said over 2,000 enterprises signed up for early access within the first 24 hours of the announcement.

Alibaba shares surged 5.2% in Hong Kong trading, adding $18 billion to the company's market capitalization. Analysts at UBS said the free tier could help Alibaba capture 30% of China's enterprise AI market by year-end, though they noted the strategy will pressure margins in the cloud division. The broader Hang Seng Tech Index rose 2.1% as investors bet on accelerating AI adoption across Chinese industry.
