Alibaba Cloud launched Qwen 3, its most powerful large language model to date, claiming performance that matches OpenAI's GPT-4o across key benchmarks including reasoning, coding, and multilingual tasks. The launch comes as Baidu, ByteDance, Tencent, and dozens of smaller Chinese AI companies compete for dominance in the world's second-largest AI market. The company said over 2,000 enterprises signed up for early access within the first 24 hours of the announcement.
Alibaba shares surged 5.2% in Hong Kong trading, adding $18 billion to the company's market capitalization. Analysts at UBS said the free tier could help Alibaba capture 30% of China's enterprise AI market by year-end, though they noted the strategy will pressure margins in the cloud division.
