Billionaire behind 'American Factory' firm warns of US exit amid trade friction with China

Cho Pak-shing, founder and CEO of Fuyao Glass, warned he may shut down US operations if trade tensions with China continue. Fuyao is one of the world's largest automotive glass manufacturers and the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary.

Cho stated that escalating US-China trade tensions and tariff pressures make maintaining US operations economically unviable. Fuyao operates major glass production facilities in Dedham, Ohio and Wayne, Michigan, employing thousands of American workers.

The company's US operations now face elevated import tariffs on Chinese components and components sourced through supply chains with Chinese links. Rising production costs in the US, combined with uncertainty over future tariff levels, have squeezed margins significantly.

Fuyao's potential exit would represent a major loss for US manufacturing employment in the Midwest. The warning underscores a broader trend of Chinese manufacturers reconsidering their US investments amid trade friction. Other multinational firms are similarly undertaking strategic reviews of their North American footprints.
