BYD Overtakes Toyota in Global Vehicle Sales
BYD delivered 2.8M units in Q1 surpassing Toyota.

Chinese automaker BYD reported first-quarter global vehicle deliveries of 2.8 million units, a staggering 42% increase year-on-year, overtaking Toyota's 2.6 million units for the first time in quarterly sales history. The milestone represents a tectonic shift in the global automotive industry, as a Chinese manufacturer claims the top spot in worldwide vehicle sales.
BYD's explosive growth was driven by surging demand for its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across emerging markets. In Southeast Asia, BYD has become the bestselling EV brand in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The company's Atto 3 and Seal models have also captured significant market share in Europe, where BYD now holds 8% of the EV market. Crucially, BYD's average selling price of $18,500 undercuts European and American competitors by 30-40%.
BYD shares rallied 4.8% in Hong Kong trading, while Toyota declined 1.2% in Tokyo. The gap between the two companies is expected to widen as BYD opens new manufacturing plants in Brazil, Hungary, Indonesia, and Turkey this year, bringing its global production capacity to over 5 million units annually. Toyota CEO acknowledged the competitive threat, telling investors the company must 'fundamentally rethink' its EV strategy.
