The Hormuz Strait is the world's most critical oil chokepoint. India imports ~2 million barrels per day from the Middle East. Ship seizures, tanker tensions, and price uncertainty in the strait threaten India's economic stability. Rajnath Singh's statement underscores India's need for diversified, geopolitically-insulated energy sources. Rising oil imports from Russia are part of this strategy. The Rupee/Dollar rate is sensitive to oil-price volatility. The Reserve Bank of India closely monitors interest policy to contain inflation. Strait tension could impose an additional $2-3 billion annual cost on India's economy.
