Miami Heat land Giannis Antetokounmpo in blockbuster trade with Bucks: an anatomy of the deal

The Miami Heat have pulled off one of the highest-profile blockbuster trades in NBA history: two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is moving from the Milwaukee Bucks to Miami, according to sources cited by ESPN. In exchange, the Bucks receive Tyler Herro — coming off All-Star seasons — young centre Kelel Ware, defensive utility man Jaime Jaquez Jr., Lithuanian rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis, Bobby Portis and four first-round draft picks.
Giannis carried the Bucks to an NBA championship in 2021 over his 12-year career there; but Milwaukee has gone out early in the past three playoffs. The 30-year-old Greek-Nigerian star, averaging 30.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists, remains one of the league's most dominant players. With a contract running to 2028, he is set to earn $195 million over the next three seasons.
The Miami Heat had reached the Eastern Conference finals twice in the past three years but had been unable to cross the championship threshold. Adding Giannis gives them a starting lineup alongside Bam Adebayo (28, NBA All-Defensive First Team), Jaime Jaquez Jr. — who will step up in Herro's absence — and veteran Duncan Robinson. The question that comes next is whether the Adebayo-Antetokounmpo defensive pairing makes Miami the 2027 championship favourite.
On the Bucks side, general manager Jon Horst told ESPN: «We came to this point by a decision: either rebuild or compete from beneath the cap. Tyler Herro and four draft picks give us the foundation of a roster that can compete again within 24 to 36 months». Herro, 25, averaged 23 points and 5.2 assists in 2024-25 and is a credible All-Star candidate.
Kelel Ware is a 21-year-old, 2.16-metre centre who finished second in last season's rookie-of-the-year voting. The Bucks' new «twin towers» structure — Ware and veteran Brook Lopez — will form the longest front-court in the Eastern Conference.
Lithuanian guard Jakucionis came in 5th in ESPN's latest draft rankings; the 19-year-old averaged 16 points and 7.2 assists at the University of Illinois. The Bucks hope to use him as a successor to Damian Lillard, as a bridge to Lillard's upcoming contract decision in February.
The draft-pick package — 2027, 2028, 2030 and 2032 firsts — supports the Bucks' medium-term rebuild plan. According to ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony, «this is the richest draft compensation given for a single player in NBA history, but a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo required a package at this level».
The rebalanced Eastern Conference can be summed up as: Boston Celtics (2024 champion), New York Knicks (under Jalen Brunson), Cleveland Cavaliers and now the Miami Heat. In the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves keep up the pressure. The 2027 championship odds site at DraftKings shows the Miami Heat as the top favourite at 18 per cent; Boston Celtics at 16 per cent, OKC Thunder at 14 per cent.
For LeBron James, the Giannis trade comes after a statement last month by Lakers manager JJ Redick. James, 41, will play his final contract season with the Lakers; he risks not facing a younger version of Giannis in the playoffs.
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra's philosophy — high defensive intensity, cross-cut offence — is well aligned with Giannis's game. ESPN's NBA analyst Tim MacMahon said: «Spoelstra now has the chance to do, in a much stronger version, what he has tried to achieve with Jimmy Butler over the past three years; on a basketball level, this is a very special fit». The first game of the season will be on 22 October in Miami against the Boston Celtics.
