Manchester United agree 38 million pound deal for Atalanta's Ederson

Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with Atalanta for the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Ederson Souza at a fee of around 38 million pounds, according to Sky Sports. The 25-year-old is expected to arrive at Old Trafford by the weekend for a medical and to finalise personal terms.
Ederson has played 102 matches over the last three Serie A seasons for Atalanta and played a central role in the club's 2024-25 Europa Conference League run. According to Sky Sports Italia correspondent Andrea Stinelli, the Atalanta board described the deal as 'very difficult but necessary.' Club chairman Antonio Percassi had openly indicated a priority on cash-flow protection in this summer's transfer plan.
Manchester United sporting director Christopher Vivell is said to have concluded the club's long-running search for midfield depth with Ederson. Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher remarked last month that 'Ederson's physical resilience and ball-winning numbers offer a natural bridge in United's post-Casemiro planning.' Carragher noted the player's duel-success rate had reached 64 percent.
Ederson's most recent season at Atalanta paints a profile that supports a Premier League move. According to StatsBomb data, the midfielder covered 11.4 kilometres per match in 2025-26 and ranked among the top five Serie A players for possessions won in the opposition half. Those figures align with the physical capacity head coach Ruben Amorim looks for within his double-pivot setup.
Ederson rose to the professional level from Cruzeiro's youth system in 2017 and went on to play for Corinthians, Fortaleza and Salernitana. When he joined Atalanta in summer 2023, the transfer fee was announced at 17 million euros. Maturing in Gian Piero Gasperini's disciplined press setup in Bergamo, he became a focal point in this summer's European market.
Manchester United finished last season eleventh in the Premier League, and head coach Amorim has faced criticism for the team's transitional pace in midfield. Sky Sports Premier League analyst Gary Neville said last week that 'United's midfield needs reconstruction under the pressure of European competition next season, and an Ederson-type profile is essential.' Amorim has indicated in press conferences that he intends to continue building the midfield line as a three-player block.
Atalanta plans to direct most of the proceeds from Ederson's sale toward younger players. Atalanta sporting director Tony D'Amico told La Gazzetta dello Sport that 'we are interested in lower-profile but high-potential names to replace the players we lose.' Sky Italia reports the club has begun preliminary talks with Cristian Medina of Boca Juniors.
On the financial side, the framework of Financial Fair Play rules closely tracking Manchester United's summer spending is a determining factor. To remain within the FFP corridor, the club will lean on sales from outside the first-team squad. According to KPMG Football Benchmark, United is close to recording an operational loss of 95 million pounds for the 2025-26 financial year.
Ederson's adaptation to the Premier League is also being viewed through the lens of the club's brand strategy in Brazil. United's deputy commercial director Florence Hardouin has stressed the importance of continuing to invest in Brazilian players to expand the club's Latin American social-media audience. Despite the limited impact of former right-winger Antony, United's Brazilian following has grown by 38 percent over the last three years.
Within the new format calculation of the Premier League's UEFA quota, United's participation in European competition next season appears close to confirmed. Ederson's positioning at the centre of long-term midfield planning at Old Trafford will be a test of how Amorim's recent technical-staff changes will bear fruit.
