Chelsea want $161M for Enzo Fernandez amid potential exit, sources tell ESPN

According to ESPN, Chelsea are demanding £120 million (about $161 million) as a transfer fee for 24-year-old Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The player joined the English club from Benfica in February 2023 for a fee of $121 million.
ESPN's reporting highlights three principal European clubs reassessing Fernandez before his contract end: Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Real Madrid keep Enzo Fernandez on a priority target list for their planned midfield renewal.
Fernandez was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup squad and was named the tournament's best young player. He served as vice-captain at the 2024 Copa America. ESPN's Buenos Aires correspondent Moises Llorens, citing family circles, reported that the player wants to feature alongside Lionel Messi at the opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup.
Chelsea's sale expectation is part of the broad squad-renewal policy of BlueCo owner Todd Boehly. ESPN financial analyst Pablo Maurer noted that the club has spent roughly $1.6 billion on transfers over the past two seasons and is planning high-value player sales to rebalance under UEFA Financial Sustainability Rules.
The Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) framework is also cited as a rationale for the sale. Football-finance expert Kieran Maguire, in analysis on BBC Radio 5, said Chelsea's policy of long-term player contracts (Fernandez signed an 8.5-year deal) lowers amortisation costs but that high cash transfer needs must be met through sales.
On the Real Madrid side, Enzo Fernandez is named as one of new head coach Jose Mourinho's midfield-restructuring priorities. Citing Marca and AS, ESPN reported that the club wants to add a creative midfielder alongside the Aurelien Tchouameni-Eduardo Camavinga pair. Mourinho's assistant coach Joao Sacramento is known to have tracked Fernandez since the player's Benfica spell.
On the Paris Saint-Germain side, Fernandez's profile is being evaluated as part of Luis Enrique's midfield-renewal plan. PSG sporting director Luis Campos has stated openly that the club's transfer priorities are players on long-term contracts. The transfer window after the Champions League final is expected to see active movement.
Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Besiktas and other Turkish clubs are not directly involved in this transfer; however the overall tone of the window affects the entire European market. Turkish media reported that completion of the Enzo Fernandez transfer could fuel knock-on transfer activity in the Super Lig stemming from Premier League sales.
Enzo Fernandez's representatives, the Buenos Aires-based agency Uruveniste Soccer, have not yet made an official statement. Per ESPN's reporting, a brief message from the player's side indicates that he wants his own preference considered in the club-to-club decision process. Family circles said the player would also weigh Chelsea's Champions League participation in any decision to remain in the Premier League.
The transfer window is expected to formally open in early July. Under Financial Sustainability regulations and the UEFA and English Premier League frameworks, the offer structures from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and PSG will be reviewed. Outcomes will become clear once the transfer is completed; this article is not investment or betting advice.
