In a blog post, Google's senior vice-president for search said the company wanted to 'increase the rate at which we send clicks to sources'. Under the new design, every summary box will include at least three direct links to different publishers.

The change follows complaints from a coalition that includes The Times, Le Monde and Süddeutsche Zeitung, which has argued the AI summaries are eroding their traffic. Spanish publishers last week launched a fresh lawsuit on copyright fairness.

Google is among the firms expected to take additional transparency steps under the European Union's Digital Services Act and emerging AI rules. The shares ticked higher after the announcement.
