Apple's 2027 roadmap rumors: AirPods with cameras for AI and a second folding iPhone

Supply-chain rumors about Apple's 2027 product roadmap have intensified. The latest set, aggregated by The Verge, point to two flagship products: a new AirPods generation carrying camera modules, and a second-generation folding iPhone.
The idea of AirPods with cameras was first floated by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in 2024. The rumored design involves a small infrared sensor and an external visual channel, with the goal of feeding Apple Intelligence 'visual context' to improve its environmental awareness.
The aim is not to stream images to the phone screen but to give the assistant ambient context. A user looking at an object and asking 'how much is this' could have the assistant interpret a brief frame from the earbuds and answer. A physical privacy switch is described for user-side control.
On the folding iPhone front, the rumor mill describes a two-generation story. The first generation — placed in September 2026 — promises a horizontal folding screen, a 6.8-inch external display and an 8.5-inch internal one. The second generation is meant to thin the hinge, eliminate the visible display crease and slim the chassis further.
Apple's late entry into folding hardware is calibrated. The company has watched Samsung and Huawei work through 2019-2023 hinge and screen issues and waited until those problems stabilised. Supply-chain sources indicate Samsung Display is at least the hinge-panel supplier.
Pricing will be challenging. Rumored sticker prices for the first folding iPhone land in the $2,300-$2,700 band — the top of the smartphone retail range. The target audience is clearly the professional and premium segment.
A third rumor shifts the next Vision Pro 2 to the final quarter of 2027. Lower weight, higher pixel density and a more accessible price (around $2,200) are reported targets. AI integration is the front concern: the AirPods camera, Vision Pro and iPhone would all talk to a single contextual engine.
On the Apple Silicon side, the M5 and M6 generations roll out through 2026-2027. The rumored 2 nm process transition has slipped into 2027, with the A20 chip expected to be the first 2 nm family member. The promised gain is energy efficiency more than raw performance.
Apple's 2027 strategy is to redesign hardware around the AI experience. A visual channel, three-dimensional spatial compute and a folding form factor each add a modality to the assistant experience. That is a pivot relevant to both competition and privacy positioning.
Rumors are not certainty. Once the official WWDC 2026 and the September 2026 keynote land, the picture will sharpen. For now, supply-chain signals show the product portfolio expanding materially over the next two years — but it is too early to lock in the final shape of individual features.
Readers watching for buy signals should treat the timeline as conditional. The pattern with Apple has long been that the rumored device often arrives, but the specifics — price, exact camera count, hinge geometry — drift between leak and shipping date.
