A 15,000-tonne shipment of rice donated by China's government arrived at the port of Havana, the first batch of a promised 60,000 tonnes, as the island grapples with dire shortages.

A 15,000-tonne shipment of rice donated by China's government has arrived at the port of Havana, Cuban officials reported. According to the island's president, the batch is the first of a total 60,000 tonnes that Beijing has promised to donate.
The delivery came as Cuba grapples with severe shortages of basic food and energy. The government said the aid would reach consumers across the country as well as health and education institutions.
Cuba's leader thanked Beijing, describing the donation as a gesture of solidarity. Economic ties between China and Cuba remain in focus amid continuing US sanctions and pressure on the island.
