Venezuela earthquake death toll passes 1,700 as tens of thousands remain missing
Venezuelan authorities now put the death toll from the 24 June twin earthquakes at more than 1,700, with 5,034 people injured. Up to 68,000 are reported missing as UN-backed rescue efforts continue in the coastal region of La Guaira.

Venezuelan authorities have said the death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck the country on 24 June has risen above 1,700. According to officials, 5,034 people were injured and as many as 68,000 remain unaccounted for.
In the coastal region of La Guaira, where the destruction was heaviest, UN-backed teams are working to reach those trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Rescue operations are advancing slowly because of damaged structures and the risk of aftershocks, and many survivors are choosing to sleep outdoors.
Officials warned that the toll could change given the large number of people still missing. As international relief teams arrive in the region, the government said access to shelter, drinking water and medical care was the immediate priority. The disaster adds to the country's prolonged economic and political uncertainty.
