Oscar-nominated Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi dies aged 56
The Iranian-born French author and illustrator Marjane Satrapi has died at the age of 56. Known internationally for her graphic novel 'Persepolis', she received an Oscar nomination for the animated film of the same name. Literary figures and cultural institutions have issued tributes.
BBC Middle EastAccording to the BBC, Marjane Satrapi, the author of the graphic novel 'Persepolis', has died in Paris at the age of 56. Born in Iran in 1969, Satrapi captured her family's years of exile in the 1980s and her personal story in a four-volume graphic novel published between 2000 and 2003. 'Persepolis' has been translated into dozens of languages and sold millions of copies worldwide.
With the animated film 'Persepolis', which she made in 2007 with director Vincent Paronnaud, she won the Jury Prize at Cannes and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. She continued her cinema career with 'Chicken with Plums' in subsequent years and produced many other works in literature and art. She had been living in France in recent years.
France's Ministry of Culture and many literary magazines issued tributes. Comments from the Iranian cultural diaspora highlighted that Satrapi gave voice to both personal experience and the shared questions of migrant generations. A commemoration is expected to be organised in Paris in the coming days.
