Senegal's Faye makes first visit to Mali as Ecowas president
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye traveled to Mali's capital Bamako for his first visit in his capacity as Ecowas chairperson. The trip came just days after Faye launched his own political party in Dakar.
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye held a one-day working visit to Mali's capital Bamako on Tuesday. The trip was made in a dual capacity, as both head of state of Senegal and the current chairperson of Ecowas.
Faye held talks with his Malian counterpart, Assimi Goïta, with the discussions reported to focus on regional security cooperation and political transitions across West Africa. The visit drew added attention as it came just days after Faye launched his own political party in Dakar.
Ecowas has been working in recent years to redefine its relationship with military-led governments in several member states. Faye's chairmanship is seen as part of the bloc's effort to sustain dialogue with countries in political transition, such as Mali.
