Peking University unveils chip-design tool to aid Huawei's ambitions
Researchers at Peking University have unveiled a prototype chip-design software tool they say could help Huawei build advanced semiconductors despite US-led restrictions. The tool is a prototype for electronic design automation (EDA).

Researchers at Peking University say they have developed a prototype tool for chip-design software, a step they claim could help Huawei Technologies build cutting-edge semiconductors despite US-led trade restrictions. The team unveiled the electronic design automation (EDA) tool this week.
EDA is the highly specialised software engineers use to design and verify microchips, and access to leading Western tools has been a chokepoint for Chinese firms under export controls. The university framed its prototype as a domestic alternative, though independent verification of its capabilities will matter.
If the tool proves effective at scale, it could ease one constraint on China's drive for semiconductor self-sufficiency, though manufacturing hurdles remain. Analysts will watch whether the technology moves from prototype to reliable industrial use. This is not investment advice.
