Uruguay widens free meningitis vaccination for teens after unusual rise in cases
Uruguay's health ministry widened free meningococcal vaccination to 11- and 12-year-olds from July 3. Officials cited an unusual rise this year, with twenty infections and five deaths, three of them children, tied mainly to serogroup C.

Uruguay's health ministry widened its free meningococcal vaccination programme to include 11- and 12-year-olds from Friday, July 3. The decision followed a rise in cases recorded this year.
According to officials, the country has logged twenty infections and five deaths since the start of the year, three of the fatalities among children. Most cases were linked to the strain of the bacteria known as serogroup C.
The ministry said vaccination is important for protecting against the disease and urged families to have their children immunised. Officials said they would continue to monitor case numbers closely.
