US proposes fresh tariffs on 60 economies over forced labor
The Office of the US Trade Representative proposed fresh tariffs on 60 economies, including China, under Section 301. Greer said the actions target supply chains linked to forced labor.
CNBC Top NewsAccording to a statement from US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the Office of the US Trade Representative is considering fresh tariffs on 60 economies under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. The proposed measures would target supply chains tied to products allegedly linked to forced labor. The list reportedly includes major exporters such as China, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
Greer said the proposals concerning Brazil tariffs remain 'nuanced'. The formal process will enter a public comment window following stakeholder consultations. The White House said USTR continues to deploy Section 301 tools selectively.
The development comes as the US ratchets up tariff pressure on global supply chains. Market analysts expect affected sectors could include textiles, electronics and mining inputs. The application of tariffs will become clearer once USTR evaluates the comments received.
