Relations had soured after former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent a letter demanding that Spain apologize for historical events. According to El País, the new meeting seals the normalization of ties after seven years of tension.
Mexico and Spain share deep historical, cultural and economic links. Restoring diplomatic relations could also pave the way for stronger trade and investment ties, and both leaders signalled a desire to move past the dispute and look ahead.
