The US Senate appears poised to clear one of the last hurdles to confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general. Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, one of the sharpest holdouts against the nomination, struck a deal to end the controversial "anti-weaponization fund" that had become a sticking point in negotiations.
Cornyn had long argued the fund could be misused for political purposes and had threatened to block Blanche's confirmation over it. While full details of the agreement were not disclosed, aides said Cornyn's objection has been resolved and the nomination can now move to a full Senate vote.
If confirmed, Blanche would take over the Justice Department's top post as a close ally of the Trump administration. A confirmation vote is expected in the coming days, part of a broader debate over staffing and policy direction at the department.
