DRC Ebola outbreak becomes one of the worst on record with 1,000+ confirmed cases
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has crossed 1,000 confirmed cases and 267 deaths, making it one of the worst on record. The WHO and local authorities say conflict in the eastern provinces is delaying response operations.

Public health minister Roger Kamba said in a Saturday briefing in Kinshasa that confirmed cases now total 1,024 with 267 deaths, putting the case-fatality rate around 26%. The outbreak is concentrated in North Kivu and Ituri provinces.
WHO Africa director Matshidiso Moeti said 350,000 doses of the Ervebo and Mvabea vaccines have been deployed, but armed attacks on humanitarian convoys and limited road access continue to widen the outbreak's map. The withdrawal of roughly $12 million in US funding has left a visible gap in the response plan.
Neighbouring Uganda and Rwanda have stepped up border screening, and FIFA is weighing a fan travel advisory ahead of the 2026 African Cup of Nations qualifiers. The next field coordination meeting is set for Friday in Goma.
