Hours later, a separate attack by Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the nearby town of El Jamama left at least nine more people dead and triggered a fresh wave of displacement, according to the same sources. Local rights groups say civilians in the area continue to bear the brunt of the fighting between the RSF and Sudan's military.
The attacks add to a mounting civilian toll in Sudan's civil war, which has displaced millions of people and drawn repeated warnings from aid organizations about the risks facing those still in contested areas. International calls for a ceasefire have so far failed to halt the fighting.
