Three killed as volcano erupts on Indonesian island
A volcano on an island in eastern Indonesia erupted, killing at least three of the villagers who were being evacuated. Several regional flights were cancelled because of the ash plume.

Indonesia's volcanology agency said the eruption sent ash and gas several kilometres into the sky around midnight. Surrounding villages were placed at the highest evacuation alert; at least three villagers are reported buried under debris.
Officials said pyroclastic flows and volcanic lightning have been observed and that residents are barred from returning home for now. Some flights from Bali and Lombok have been delayed or cancelled because of the ash cloud.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and records dozens of volcanic events each year. The national disaster agency warned that, depending on seasonal wind patterns, the ash could damage agriculture in the coming days.
