An Indian-flagged commercial vessel sank in the Red Sea on Tuesday after coming under attack near the Yemeni port city of Mokha, according to a local official cited by the state Saba news agency. The coast guard rescued the entire crew, and India's ministry of external affairs confirmed all those aboard were safe.
Yemen's internationally recognised government blamed Iran-backed Houthi rebels for the strike, while New Delhi condemned the assault as an unprovoked act of aggression against a civilian ship. Neither side has released further detail on how the vessel was struck or the extent of the damage before it went down.
The sinking comes weeks after the Houthis declared a maritime blockade targeting vessels bound for Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude exporter, raising fresh concern about the safety of Red Sea shipping lanes that carry a large share of global trade between Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
