Israel strikes Beirut for first time since Hezbollah ceasefire, killing senior commander

The Israeli military struck a building in southern Beirut to target a senior Hezbollah commander. It is the first such attack on the Lebanese capital since last year's ceasefire.

The Israeli Defence Forces said an air strike on the Dahiyeh district in southern Beirut targeted Hassan Hassanieh, the head of Hezbollah's medium-range missile unit. Lebanon's health ministry reported at least 12 people killed and more than 30 wounded.

The attack is the most serious breach of the ceasefire that Washington and Paris brokered late in 2025 as it relates to the capital. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged 'extreme caution' over Beirut, while Hezbollah vowed retaliation.

The Lebanese pound fell 4% against the dollar on the parallel market and the Beirut stock exchange triggered a brief trading halt. Brent crude futures climbed to 86.40 dollars on the news, 1.8% above the previous close.
