Sri Lanka has launched an investigation into its deadliest prison riot in years. The death toll from clashes between rival groups rose to 27, and more than 100 people were reported wounded in the violence.
According to officials, armed police and commandos were not sent inside the prison but were deployed to guard the perimeter of Negombo prison. Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara told parliament that a criminal investigation had been opened into the incident.
The clashes took place on Monday, after which security was tightened. The investigation is expected to examine the causes of the riot and conditions inside the prison. Officials' findings and any measures to be taken are due to be announced in the coming days.
