The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has become the second-largest ever recorded, with more than 2,100 deaths confirmed. Health officials said the virus has spread to a sixth province in recent weeks, with some areas now reporting an average of one death every 30 minutes.
Health workers are facing serious obstacles in containing the outbreak. Resistance to quarantine measures and misinformation about the virus persist in some communities, slowing isolation and treatment efforts. At the same time, strikes by unpaid medical staff and threats from armed groups operating in the region are restricting the movement of response teams.
International health organizations are calling for accelerated vaccine deliveries and secure corridors for aid workers. Officials warn that if the outbreak is not brought under control, the risk of it spreading to neighboring countries will continue to grow.
