Chile captures fugitive convicted of folk singer Victor Jara's murder

Authorities in Chile announced the capture of Nelson Haase, one of the men convicted in the case of folk singer Victor Jara, who was kidnapped and killed in the days following the country's 1973 military coup. Haase had evaded justice for years despite his conviction.

Jara was detained shortly after the coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power, tortured and killed inside a Santiago stadium along with hundreds of other detainees. His murder became one of the most recognized symbols of human rights abuses committed during the Pinochet era.

Haase's capture shows Chilean authorities are still pursuing crimes committed during the dictatorship more than five decades ago. Courts in the country continue to investigate other individuals implicated in abuses from that period.
