Chinese state media raised the death toll from flash flooding in the northwestern province of Gansu, with fatalities in Weiyuan county climbing from 10 to 25 people, according to the state news agency Xinhua. A further 23 people were injured in flooding that struck the area last weekend.
Large parts of the country remain on alert as rivers continue to run high following heavy rainfall in recent weeks. China's National Commission for Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief has been coordinating with provincial authorities on emergency response and flood mitigation efforts.
The flooding adds to a difficult summer of extreme weather across China, with authorities facing mounting pressure to strengthen flood defenses and early-warning systems in vulnerable inland provinces as climate-linked rainfall events grow more intense.
