Tehran, however, said no direct negotiations with Washington were under way, with Iranian officials describing indirect contacts through Oman instead. The conflicting accounts left uncertainty over how close the two sides actually are to a deal that would end the conflict.
Oil prices opened the week higher as the war entered its fifth month. Analysts say the threat to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is now at its highest level since the war began.
