SK Hynix to double wafer capacity within five years to meet AI demand
South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix plans to double its wafer capacity over the next five years to keep pace with AI-driven demand, according to Nikkei Asia. The plan signals a meaningful capacity build in the global memory supply chain.
Nikkei Asia · Staff WriterAccording to Nikkei Asia, South Korean semiconductor maker SK Hynix plans to double its wafer capacity over the next five years to meet the surge in memory demand driven by AI applications. The company tied the move to long-term purchase commitments from key customers.
The report says the investment also covers additional high-bandwidth memory (HBM) lines. Order volumes from large customers, including Nvidia and AMD, are highlighted as primary drivers of the planned expansion. Sector analysts are also tracking related capex from upstream and downstream suppliers.
The decision could push Samsung Electronics and Micron to reassess their capacity strategies. The South Korean government continues to back semiconductor incentives, with new R&D funding calls now on the table. Investors will await SK Hynix's detailed capex and total investment figure when officially disclosed.
