A newly published report found that the Nigeria-based militant group Boko Haram used commercially available artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, to help plan attacks and build explosives. The report, titled 'God Has Helped Us, and So Will AI: How the Terrorist Group Boko Haram Uses Frontier AI,' is based on 57 interviews with 27 former members.
Researchers said the group used AI tools both for logistical planning and to gather information related to building explosive devices. The findings have heightened concerns about armed groups misusing widely available commercial AI systems.
Security analysts said technology companies need to review safeguards intended to prevent such misuse. The report called for security forces across the Sahel and West Africa to prepare for this emerging threat.
