Japan, US, Philippines to hold September investment forum for Manila AI hub
Japan, the United States and the Philippines plan to hold an investment forum in Manila in September that aims to position the Philippines as a regional artificial-intelligence hub. The forum will focus on semiconductor, data-centre and high-performance computing projects. The move is a counterweight to China's regional technology footprint.

Japan, the United States and the Philippines will hold an investment forum in Manila in September. The three-way grouping aims to position the Philippines as a regional artificial-intelligence hub in Southeast Asia. The agenda covers semiconductor manufacturing, data-centre investment and high-performance computing projects. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr will host the forum.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said in a statement that 'Manila's regional AI role will be shaped through balanced alliances'. US INDOPACOM Policy Director Kelly Magsamen said Washington is preparing to invite companies including TSMC, GlobalFoundries and NVIDIA. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticised the plan, saying it 'runs counter to ASEAN centrality'.
Dindo Manhit, an Atlantic Council Philippines analyst, said Manila 'combines geopolitical position with structural economic advantages, albeit in a limited way'. PLDT and Globe Telecom said partnership talks on data-centre construction are continuing. An ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting is scheduled for 12 June in Jakarta.
