Iran seizes 'floating armoury' vessel in the Gulf of Oman

Iranian military personnel have seized a ship described as a 'floating armoury' in the Gulf of Oman. The incident has again raised tensions and shipping insurance costs around the Strait of Hormuz.

UK-based maritime intelligence firms reported that Iranian Revolutionary Guards boats stopped the vessel in international waters of the Gulf of Oman and brought it to the port of Bandar Abbas. So-called 'floating armoury' ships typically carry weapons belonging to private security firms and provide counter-piracy support to client crews.

Iran's Foreign Ministry made no direct comment on the incident, but semi-official news agency Mehr reported that the ship was seized 'carrying unlicensed heavy weapons'. The company reportedly owning the vessel said it is awaiting independent confirmation of events.

The news lifted Brent crude by around half a dollar per barrel at Friday's close and stoked fresh speculation of premium increases on regional shipping insurance. Major liner operators such as Maersk and CMA CGM say they have continued to expand alternative routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
