Acute Hunger Grips Nearly 20 Million People in War-Battered Sudan, IPC Says

The UN-backed IPC classification said nearly 20 million people in Sudan face acute hunger as the country enters the second year of war. The report confirms famine conditions persist in the North Darfur region.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said 19.8 million people in Sudan face acute food insecurity, equivalent to about 40% of the population. According to the IPC, famine conditions (Phase 5) persist in and around the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, while seven other zones face elevated famine risk. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced over 16 million people.

The report says food distribution is continuously disrupted near frontline areas, and negotiations with the RSF have not yet secured a stable humanitarian corridor. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said funding meets only about one-third of annual needs. The United States and several European countries are working to accelerate additional pledges.

The IPC said conditions are likely to worsen further next month with the approaching rainy season. Aid agencies report this harvest season has been heavily disrupted by conflict, and grain reserves are limited. The IPC stressed access by armed parties is critical to averting famine.
