Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara has gone into exile in the United States after spending five years in prison. He was arrested in 2021 during the island's largest anti-government protests in decades and was later sentenced on charges of public disorder, contempt and disrespect for national symbols.
Otero Alcántara co-founded the San Isidro Movement, a collective of Havana-based artists, writers and musicians that protests against the Cuban government. He accepted exile after the United States granted him humanitarian parole.
He was given a hero's welcome upon arriving in Miami following his release. His case has become one of the most prominent international symbols of the Cuban government's crackdown on dissent.
