Taiwan Detects PLA Helicopter Crossing Taiwan Strait Median Line

Taiwan's defence ministry said it detected four People's Liberation Army aircraft, including a helicopter and an unmanned aerial vehicle, operating around the island on July 20 and the following morning. The helicopter and drone crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and remained east of it for nearly 9.5 hours in an area Taiwan designates as "R9." It was recorded as one of the first known instances of the median line being crossed for such an extended period.

Officials in Taipei said the flight pattern was unprecedented and has raised concern that Beijing may be rehearsing a new kind of operation for a potential cross-strait conflict. The median line, an informal boundary that has for decades helped limit direct contact between the two militaries, has been crossed with increasing frequency by PLA aircraft in recent years. The development came amid a period of heightened tension between China and Taiwan.

Taiwan's military said it will continue monitoring People's Liberation Army activity around the strait and the surrounding waters. Analysts expect further tests of the median line in the coming weeks, and regional governments are watching closely for any signs of escalation.
