Mali pardons French official sentenced to 20 years in prison

Mali President Assimi Goïta announced Thursday that he had pardoned French national Yann Vézilier, who had been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Vézilier, an official at the French embassy, was arrested last year after Mali's military-led government accused him of involvement in a plot to destabilize the country.

The pardon is being read as a possible sign of a thaw in the strained diplomatic relationship between Bamako and Paris. Mali's military government has largely severed ties with France since the 2020 coup and pivoted toward closer relations with Russia.

Analysts say the pardon does not amount to a full reconciliation with France but could open a narrow channel for limited dialogue between the two countries. No official statement has yet been made on the timing or conditions of Vézilier's release.
