Heat dome scorches Europe: UK, France, Italy and Spain swelter
Temperatures hit record May highs in the UK and France on Monday, as forecasters warned of a prolonged spell of extreme heat across Europe. A heat dome of warm air from North Africa is driving the surge.

Extreme heat gripping much of Europe pushed temperatures to record May highs in the UK and France on Monday. Forecasters warned that a prolonged spell of extreme heat is set to last through the week.
Experts say a mass of warm air from North Africa, trapped under a high-pressure system, has formed a heat dome over western Europe. That has driven temperatures well above seasonal norms, with highs more typical of high summer. In Spain, readings are expected to peak at around 38 degrees Celsius later in the week.
Parts of Italy imposed restrictions as authorities issued warnings on water use and health. The heatwave is lifting electricity demand and raising agricultural risks, while posing public-health concerns, particularly for the elderly and children.
