Turkish intelligence chief Kalın: Türkiye now a decisive voice at crisis-management tables

Speaking at a security conference, National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) chief İbrahim Kalın said Türkiye had become an influential voice at diplomatic tables managing both regional and global crises. He cited Ankara's 'constructive interface' role in Syria and the Iran–US talks.

Kalın was speaking at the Türkiye Diplomacy Strategies Conference in Istanbul. The MİT chief said the country's direct diplomatic touchpoints had widened significantly over the last three years, ranging from consultative roles inside NATO to security dialogues with Gulf states.

On Syria, Kalın stressed that 'preserving stability in the north-east' is critical for regional security, and said Ankara was coordinating its contacts with both the Kurdish administration and the government in Damascus. On the Iran–US talks, he said Türkiye was acting as a 'supporting channel' alongside mediators such as Oman and Qatar.

On the domestic angle Kalın said Turkish foreign policy was 'consistently shaped by a professional, smart-security mindset', and that intelligence capacity would be reinforced through technology and human-resource investments. Presidency sources confirmed that MİT's 2026 budget will be presented to parliament around mid-year.
