France records its hottest day ever as heatwave grips Europe
France experienced its hottest day on record on Wednesday, surpassing a record set just a day earlier, the national weather agency said. More than 50 departments recorded temperatures of 40C or higher. Much of Europe is gripped by a severe heatwave.

France experienced its hottest day since measurements began in 1947 on Wednesday, the national weather agency said. The new record surpassed a mark set just a day earlier.
According to the agency, more than 50 departments across mainland France recorded temperatures of 40C or higher since the latest heatwave began on June 17. Authorities issued health warnings for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
The heatwave is affecting much of Europe; the UK logged its hottest June day on record, and several countries reported strain on power grids and transport. Experts say climate change is increasing the frequency of such extreme heat events.
