According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, the two top diplomats held a "positive and constructive" phone call on Tuesday. As reported by the SCMP, it was the first reported cabinet-level communication since US President Donald Trump's visit to China in mid-May.
Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues between the two countries. In the call, both sides were said to have sent messages about the management of economic and diplomatic ties. Analysts stressed that the contact would be watched closely for the direction of the bilateral relationship.
