EU allocates extra 12 billion euros for Baltic states' defence
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said an additional 12 billion euros will be provided to the Baltic states under the 'Security Action for Europe (SAFE)' joint defence financing programme.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that an additional 12 billion euros will be allocated to the Baltic states under the 'Security Action for Europe (SAFE)' joint defence financing programme. According to Anadolu Agency, the move aims to strengthen defence capacity on the bloc's eastern flank.
The Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have been at the centre of calls to increase defence spending in recent years because of their borders with Russia. The SAFE programme is intended to let member states accelerate defence investments through joint financing.
The Commission said the funds could be used in areas such as infrastructure, air defence and logistics. The distribution of the resources and the implementation timetable will depend on talks to be held with member states.
