Spain's wildfire in Almeria becomes country's deadliest blaze in 20 years
At least 12 people have died and 23 remain missing after Spain's deadliest wildfire in two decades tore through the southern region of Almeria. Authorities said the blaze may have started when a power line fell onto dry vegetation, as Spain accounts for around 40% of all land burned across Europe this year.

At least 12 people have died and 23 remain missing after a wildfire tore through the southern Spanish region of Almeria in the country's deadliest blaze in two decades, authorities said.
Officials said the fire may have started when a power line fell onto dry vegetation during an intense heatwave. Firefighters are still battling the flames as an early and severe fire season grips much of southern Europe.
Spain now accounts for around 40% of all land burned across the continent this year, officials said, as authorities in Portugal, Greece and France also report ongoing wildfires. Emergency services have evacuated several communities near Almeria and continue searching for those still unaccounted for.
