The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, had earlier declared a "maritime embargo" against Saudi Arabia, part of a broader escalation tied to the wider conflict between the US and Iran that has roiled Gulf shipping lanes for weeks.
The attacks have contributed to a sharp rise in global oil prices, which topped $100 a barrel this week for the first time since May, as insurers and shippers reassess the risks of transiting the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
