Dress made from 500 loaves of bread stuns African film awards
A Nigerian designer drew attention at the African Movie Academy Awards red carpet in Lagos with a dress crafted from 500 loaves of bread. The piece was conceived as a statement on continent-wide food waste. It drew millions of social media interactions.

A Nigerian designer walked the red carpet at last week's African Movie Academy Awards in Lagos in a dress made from 500 loaves of bread. The piece was conceived to draw attention to the millions of tonnes of food wasted on the continent every year. Its skirt used bread crusts, while the bodice was crafted from processed grains.
The AMAA ceremony is one of the most prestigious film events on the continent. Awards in 24 categories went out this year, with productions from Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt leading recognition. The designer told reporters the dress would be collected and donated after the show by volunteers.
Food and Agriculture Organization figures show that grain losses in sub-Saharan Africa reach 15 percent of annual output. The display urged producers, governments and supply-chain actors to revisit storage and distribution investments.
