AliExpress fined record amount by EU under Digital Services Act
The European Union has fined Chinese online retailer AliExpress a record amount under its Digital Services Act, regulators said Wednesday. The penalty makes AliExpress the latest major online marketplace to face sanctions under the EU's landmark content and consumer-protection law. Brussels has stepped up enforcement of the rules against large platforms over the past year.
European Union regulators announced Wednesday that they had fined Chinese online retailer AliExpress a record amount under the bloc's Digital Services Act, citing violations of the law's consumer-protection and content-moderation requirements.
The fine makes AliExpress the latest major online marketplace to be penalized under the landmark regulation, which requires large platforms to police illegal products, counterfeit goods and harmful content more aggressively or face escalating sanctions. EU officials said investigators found the company had failed to adequately vet third-party sellers on its platform.
The decision is the latest in a string of enforcement actions Brussels has taken against major tech and e-commerce platforms over the past year. AliExpress said it was reviewing the ruling and had already made changes to its seller-vetting process.
