A heatwave gripping a large part of Europe is affecting more than 100 million people in a belt stretching from Spain to Germany, France 24 reported. In many countries, temperatures have climbed well above seasonal norms.
Authorities in countries including France, Belgium and Germany issued warnings at red-alert level. Some events were cancelled because of the extreme heat, and France took several nuclear reactors offline. In Paris, residents slept in parks to keep cool.
The heat has driven up energy demand and added strain to health systems. Trade unions called for protective measures for those working outdoors. Meteorologists warn that such heatwaves may become more frequent as the climate warms.
