US becomes India's top gas supplier as Iran war severs Gulf flows

The United States has become India's top gas supplier after the Iran war severed Gulf flows, CNBC reported. India's gas purchases from the US grew steadily through 2025 and 2026, driven by Washington's push to sell more American energy to the South Asian country.

CNBC reported that the United States has overtaken Gulf suppliers as India's leading source of liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. Data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell shows that Gulf-origin shipments have been constrained during the Iran-US conflict, with Indian refiners filling the gap through American cargoes. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in a statement that India would continue diversifying suppliers to secure energy supply.

The report noted that US LNG exporters including Cheniere Energy and Venture Global have weighted long-term contracts toward Indian state-owned buyers. New offtake deals signed in late 2025 by Indian Oil and GAIL have reinforced Atlantic-basin supply flows amid Strait of Hormuz tanker uncertainty. Analysts said US-origin cargoes have remained relatively stable even as Asia-route freight costs have risen.

According to Reuters, Brent traded in a choppy band around 80 dollars as S&P Global Commodity Insights projected that India's medium-term gas dependence on the US could continue rising. This is not investment advice.
