Liberty Bell Bay, the Tasmanian plant known as Australia's only manganese alloy smelter, has formally entered liquidation. Officials said efforts to recover money owed to creditors would begin shortly.
The company, part of the GFG Alliance group, said falling global demand for steel and alloy products combined with rising energy costs had made the operation unsustainable. Liquidators will oversee the sale of assets and search for a potential buyer.
Unions said the closure would directly affect hundreds of workers in the region and could also hurt small businesses in the plant's supply chain. Tasmania's government said it was considering support packages for affected employees.
