One in six young people in the UK may be out of work or training within five years, report warns
A new report cited by the BBC warns that, without action, 1.25 million 16-to-24-year-olds in the UK could be out of work, education or training by 2031. The report says the country is 'at risk of a lost generation'. Suggested measures focus on vocational training and youth-employment support.

According to BBC Business, the proportion of 16-to-24-year-olds in the UK who are not in employment, education or training is forecast to reach one in six by 2031 under unchanged-policy assumptions. The report highlights that this 'NEET' category currently stands at around 900,000 people and could rise to 1.25 million over the coming years.
The analysis cited in the report says that the structural disadvantages young people face in the post-Covid labour market have become more pronounced for those with weaker digital skills. Young people who leave education without finding a vocational bridge programme face long-term losses in income and well-being; the report also flags mental-health issues that add to the load on the National Health Service.
The policy framework proposed covers stronger vocational training networks, employer incentives for hiring young workers, and early interventions for the school-to-work transition in lower-income areas. This article is not personal career advice.
