Uganda dog-scam network: dozens of dogs rescued and a suspect arrested
Following a BBC investigation, Ugandan authorities have dismantled a network that staged fake distress scenes with dogs to elicit social media donations. Dozens of dogs were rescued in the operation and one suspect has been arrested.

An earlier BBC investigation had documented how scammers used TikTok and Facebook videos staging dogs in distress to collect donations. After the broadcast, Uganda's Animal Welfare Unit raided a residence on the outskirts of Kampala to launch the operation.
Authorities seized dozens of dogs in the raid; the animals were transferred to local shelters and put under veterinary examination. Officials say the arrested suspect collected thousands of dollars across multiple profiles on online donation platforms.
The prosecution is reported to be moving forward on charges of animal cruelty and digital fraud. The BBC says its investigation continues to track other groups using the same playbook. Animal welfare organisations are urging users to apply strict verification before contributing to online appeals.
